New Teacher Tips & Resources

A new school year at a new school is filled with excitement and anxiety, optimism and worry, adventure and unknowing.  Reality Check:  The first days are a little hectic as you get used to the routines and as the students get used to you.

 

So here’s a few tips to get you started on the road to a successful first year at Shonto

Preparatory School!

Classroom Management including procedures:

© Write a few class rules with student input       

© Create procedures so students know what to do, when

© Verbalize clear expectations

© Develop a respectful student-teacher relationship

© Reinforce with Respect

© Be Firm and Consistent

 

Planning Lessons: 

© Search out the resources given to you. 

© Ask for the previous teacher’s lesson plans or curriculum map.

© Plan around the Arizona standards using the approved model

© Collaborate with other teachers teaching the same grade/class

 

Parent Partnership:

© Read and abide by the Parent Compact

© Introduce yourself to all your parents via a letter and include your expectations

© Seriously consider home visits to meet parents in person in their comfort

© Communicate with parents at least bi-weekly on what’s going on in your class

 

Collaboration:

© Build positive relationships with coworkers

© Look for opportunities to collaborate with your colleagues

© Utilize other human resources in the organization

© Avoid participation in toxic talk/thinking

 

Public Relations:

© We each must be our own and the school’s PR person

© Post student work in nice displays in the classroom and halls

© Send articles about your class to the Navajo Hopi observer

© Post information about your class at the Chapter House
